The Legend of the Bananna
According to Buffoon the Baboon
~Jennifer Balarezo~

Banana said to be the first fruit ever farmed by humans. But long before humans discovered them my great, great, great, great, great grandfather Buffoon did.

Every Sunday every family in grandpa's tribe made an offering to the to the Great Baboon. The Great Baboon lived in a temple at the edge of my grandfather's village. It was a tradition that on the oldest son in each family he would get to bring the offerings to the Great Baboon after he turned ten.

On Buffoon's special day, Buffoon's mother made him take a bath and combed his hair out smooth. Then she gave him a large cucumber.

"Now take this straight to the temple and don't let anything happen to it on the way there. Then come straight home. Do you understand Buffoon?" said his mother handing Buffoon the small vegetable.

"What do I do once I get to the temple?" asked Buffoon, who wasn't exactly the brightest baboon ever to roam the jungle.

"You give the fruit to the Great Baboon and then wait for him to tell you to go home," Buffoon's mother sighed.

"Will the Great Baboon share the offering with me?" asked Buffoon.

"Of course not. It's an offering which means you give it to him to show your respect for his superiority," Buffoons mother.

"But when somebody asks you to share it's rude not too give them a piece. That's what teacher Bob says," Buffoon argued.

"Just do exactly what I tell you and don't make a fool of yourself," sighed Buffoon's mother, who was getting a bit frustrated.

"Yes mother," Buffoon said and picked the vegetable up and walked off in the direction of the temple. But on the way there his stomach started to rumble and baboon started to get hungry. Forgetting all about what he was supposed to do he sat down and started eating the cucumber. Before he knew it, it was gone.

"Now what was I supposed to be doing?" Buffoon thought to himself then he remembered that he was supposed to be making an offering to the Great Baboon. "Oh no!" gasped Baboon. " I have eaten the offering. Now what am I going to do?"

Buffoon thought for a while and then an idea came to him. "I can go into the jungle and get another cucumber," said Buffoon and he rushed of into the jungle to find another cucumber.

Buffoon looked high and low but he could not find a cucumber anywhere. Then he spotted a tree with some yellow things growing of it that looked like cucumbers except that some of them weren't the right color yet.

"Those ones must not be ripe yet. I will take the whole bushel to the Great Baboon and he can eat the ripe ones now and save the others for later" Buffoon thought. "He will be so pleased with me because instead of bringing him just one cucumber I am bringing thing of cucumbers."

Buffoon climbed up the tree and picked the bushel and dragged them off in the direction of the temple.

The temple was dark. At first it was hard to see but then Buffoon's eyes adjusted to the the dark and Buffoon could see the Great Baboon meditating on the alter. Instead of waiting quietly until the Great Baboon finished meditating like he should have Buffoon tiptoed over to the Great Baboon and tapped him on the shoulder.

"Oh, hello Buffoon," said the Great Baboon a little startled. "Why are you so late getting here?"

"Well....ummm...you see," Buffoon said nervously. "On the way over here I got really hungry and accidentally ate the cucumber I was supposed to give you so I went into the jungle and found these cucumbers in a tree. I thought you would be extraly proud of me for bringing you such a good offering."

"I see," said the Great Baboon. "Would you mind handing me your gift instead of hiding it behind your back?"

Buffoon handed them to the Great Baboon who examined them closely. "Buffoon these aren't Cucumbers. Cucumbers ever yellow."

"The yellow ones are not ripe, you can eat them later when the are riper." Buffoon smiled.

"But cucumbers do not come from trees they come from the ground," the Great Baboon told him.

"I'm sure they taste good." Buffoon said. "Why don't you try one."

"That's a good idea. How about a yellow one," said the Great Baboon pulling two of the strange vegetables out and handing one to Buffoon. The Great Buffoon pulled the stem off and peeled it and handed it to Buffoon and then peeled one for himself.

"Your right Buffoon, these are very good. But I don't think they are vegetables. They are fruits," said the Great Baboon.

"What are there names?" asked Buffoon.

"I don't know. They don't have a name yet. I think I will call them Bananas," said the Great Buffoon.

"What a pretty name," agreed Buffoon.

"Yes. I am afraid it is time to go Buffoon. Why don't you take some of these bananas back to your family. I am sure they would like them," said Buffoon giving Buffoon four bananas.

"Thank you," Buffoon smiled.

"Just promise me that next week when you bring your offering that you will bring me some more bananas," said the Great Baboon. "Then we can have them for lunch so you won't have to worry about being hungry."

"That would be wonderful," said Buffoon happily and hurried home to tell his family the good news.

And so ever since then Baboons and all there cousins have eaten bananas instead of cucumbers.
